Shadowing
Apollo: youth in medicine
In-Person shadowing through Apollo
During our Fall, Spring, and Summer sessions, Apollo students have unique access to shadowing opportunities with several dozen physicians across Delaware in primary care and 16 specialties. Physicians generally offer several shadow slots around 3 to 5 hours in length, available during both mornings and afternoons. At the mandatory Fall education session, Apollo students receive full HIPAA training and are informed about proper conduct and protocol in the clinical setting to prepare them for shadowing.

Apollo Program: Student Reflections
The Apollo Program drew my attention as it was the only program that my school offers for students that have an interest in a healthcare career path. As a high school student, it can be difficult to have exclusive access to local physician specialties, but this is something that the Apollo Program was able to offer every season… I have completed over six, four-hour observations with physicians in fields of Oncology, Gastroenterology, Neurosurgery, and ENT & Allergy… I was hesitant about my understanding of the health care community, but the Apollo Program helped me have a deeper knowledge.
– Lauren Raziano, Archmere Academy
I was interested in the medical field from a young age and having an opportunity to shadow a physician and to explore the true life of a medical professional was very exciting. I have had a few injuries in my life, so when the opportunity to shadow a physician arose, I thought it would be interesting to follow an orthopaedic specialist…By the end of the day, I felt like I had developed and learned a routine with each appointment…I was learning more and more with each patient visit. We saw a variety of conditions, from arthritis to joint replacements [and] surgical repairs. By the end of the day, I could even recognize arthritis from an x-ray! This day gave me more inspiration to pursue the career that fascinates me. I left there with one thought: “That was it, that’s what I want to do!” I am extremely grateful that I had this experience through Apollo: Youth in Medicine, and cannot wait to shadow again.
– John Kepley, Saint Elizabeth High School
I come from a family with no physicians, and had very little understanding of what it was like to work in healthcare. Apollo gave me the opportunity to be alongside physicians of different specialties and experience their patient interactions, which helped me realize that medicine was something that I truly enjoyed and wanted to pursue as a career.
– Kush Modi, Charter School of Wilmington
All because of Apollo, I was provided with opportunities I would have never had before. In Fall of 2019, I was able to shadow three different types of medical professionals from different specialties allowing me to witness first-hand clinical action. Not only was I able to be involved in these opportunities, but I was able to establish meaningful connections with physicians and student leaders. Before Apollo, I had some knowledge of different types of specialties and what physicians did in them, but I was never given the opportunity to shadow a physician and my school never provided a platform. During one of my shadowing sessions, I gained a different perspective of Primary Care. I learned that along with just treating patients you also had to connect with them. The physician I shadowed resembled this extremely well through her ability to emotionally feel what the day-to-day circumstances they were put into.
